betty & butch have teamed up with Angel Moore from Barking Barbers, Manchester's award winning Holistic dog grooming salon and Angel has kindly put together some dog bathing tips.
To wash a Dog or not to wash a Dog, that is the question?
Dogs’ that live in our homes and in some cases or bedrooms (not mine of course) are part of the family, we wash and so should they.
Take for example, if your dog is out in the park and they trod in something nasty, it is not appropriate to allow them to spread those germs all over the house, so it’s time for the dreaded bath.
Help is at hand and please email us if you have more tips.
Preparation is the key:
Get your dog towels, dog shampoo, dog conditioner and brushes and hairdryer. I repeat dog as some clients use human shampoo on dogs’ and that is a no no. Dog shampoo has been especially developed with there Ph balance in mind and like the betty & butch range the base and oils are there to enhance your dogs’ coat and skin.
Have everything to hand as shouting for someone to find the dog shampoo under the kitchen sink while you have the dog in the bath is futile.
At our salon we make up a solution of the Woodland Dream dog shampoo (my favourite scent). The solution is of warm water and shampoo in a bowl. We then sponge the solution all over the dog’s DRY coat as this brakes down the dirt quicker and you use less hot water.
Work it all in and then start to rinse but wait!!!! Before you have rinsed all of the shampoo off work the coat again to get up the remainder of the dirt and then rinse fully.
It’s up to you whether you condition your dogs’ coat but we do. At the salon we use betty & butch Coconut Dog Conditioner (lush lush lush). Apply some conditioner again to warm water in a bowl and with a different sponge apply all over the coat, avoiding the ears, eyes and mouth. Leave for about 2 minutes and rinse again until the coat is squeaky clean and the water runs clear.
At this stage your knees and arms will be killing you but don’t let the dog shake all over the place. Start your towel drying in the bath, that way there is less to shake and finish with a big hug, praise and kiss for the brave little solider.
If you hairdryer your dog, place a few bath mats on a table and stand the dog up and finish the drying process, but never leave the dog alone.
Hope these tips were of help to you.
